Stewart, Champion and Herman— and most especially Carol Channing— a new dimension was brought to the character. Thornton Wilder had told Carol that he had re-written The Matchmaker for thirty-six years and yet never got it as desired until Michael Stewart, Jerry Herman and Gower Champion brought it to the musical theatre.
